Girls from Limpopo may soon receive a confidence boost all thanks to an aspiring R&B singer.
For the past few days newcomer Jolondy Jacobs has swept up revellers in a frenzy with his curiously titled banger I Fell In Love With The Chick From Limpopo. The R&B ballad features Fiesta Black on vocals and has unsurprisingly wooed the Limpopo audience. The song is based on a true story. It all started with a girl he spotted on Instagram and he developed the hots for her.
They followed each other and months later they met. He won’t say whether they dated and how it ended. The song features Xigubu singer Fiesta Black, who Jacobs says he chose because she comes from the province and had a voice best suited for it. Jacobs was born in Boksburg on the East Rand and moved to Secunda, Mpumalanga when he was five.
He sang at primary school, but it was only in 2008 that he took music seriously. He wrote some songs and was featured on the works by relatively unknown artists from his hometown. His big break came when he performed at Skyroom Live on SABC1, where he met Lance Stehr, the kingmaker of Ghetto Ruff/Muthaland fame some eight years ago. Jacobs says he is inspired by long walks in the park to clear his mind and think out loud through music.
He describes his genre as gangster R&B and his audience straddles the young and old demographics even outside Limpopo. After eight years of knocking on doors in search of a bona fide career as a vocalist, Jacobs has come into his own. “I was never ready because I was a shy person and have lived through the struggles of township life just like any other kid. “My journey was hard because I lost my grandmother who was very close to me, but now it’s my time,” he says.
“I’m thankful to God that my talent was recognised by Lance all those years ago. I love music so much that I eat, sleep, wake up and live through music.” Sending out his endorsement for the rising star, Stehr comments: “This song is definitely going to be a national anthem. I have sent it to at least 300 people and the response I got was great.”
Jacobs plans to release an album in September.
